The Valley City State men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night, pulling away in the second half of a 70-56 victory over Mayville State.

The Vikings led just 26-25 at halftime but started the second half with a 9-0 run to take control of the game. Valley City State opened up a 53-39 lead midway through the second half. The Comets cut the advantage to 57-52 with 3:45 to go, but a quick 7-0 spurt by the Vikings put the game out of reach. VCSU outscored Mayville 44-31 in the second half.

VCSU improves to 13-11 overall and 5-5 in the North Star Athletic Association. The victory snaps a three-game losing streak, which had come by a combined seven points. The Vikings move into a four-way tie for fourth place in the NSAA standings. After Friday's results, VCSU, Viterbo, Dakota State and Waldorf are all 5-5 in the conference.

Mayville State drops to 8-13 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The Comets remain in ninth in the NSAA standings and are now two games back of Presentation College.

Jayden Ferguson poured in a game-high 23 points for the Vikings while also adding six rebounds and three assists. The junior forward went 11-for-18 shooting. Ferguson now has 1,523 career points and moved past Dwayne Smith (1,509) on Friday for fifth place all-time in Viking history.

Rashad Satahoo finished with 22 points, including 17 in the second half. He knocked down four 3's and was 8-for-8 at the free throw line. Austin Dunbar posted his conference-leading eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Chase Carpenter added five points off the bench for VCSU, and Ellwood Ellenson scored two. Point guard Jason Ralph did not score but dished out four assists and had four rebounds.

Valley City State shot 47 percent from the field (26-55), 32 percent on 3's (6-19) and 86 percent at the line (12-14). The Vikings committed just three turnovers in the game, and the two teams combined for just eight total turnovers.

Kiree Robinson scored 10 points as part of a balanced Mayville State attack. Ben Maranan and Daniel Lindgren both added five points. The Comets had just five turnovers.

Mayville State shot 43 percent overall (24-56), 25 percent on 3's (5-20) and was 3-for-3 at the line.
