Track & Field - Sat, Feb. 4, 2017

FARGO, N.D. – Viking sophomore Seri Geisler set a new school record and qualified for nationals Saturday as the Valley City State track & field teams competed at the Bison Open.

The Vikings finished with 11 Top 15 performances and set a dozen personal records at the large meet, which was hosted by North Dakota State University and primarily featured NCAA Division I and II teams.

Geisler broke her own school record in the women's shot put with a toss of 13.19 meters. That throw also tops the NAIA National Qualifying "B" Standard and will earn Geisler a spot in the NAIA Indoor National Championships, March 2-4 in Johnson City, Tenn. Her old school record was 12.92 meters, set last season. She also broke the North Star Athletic Association conference record, which was 13.12 meters by Whitney Leuenberger of Dickinson State.

Geisler finished 11th in the event and was the top finisher not from North Dakota State University or University of North Dakota. Megan Johnson had a strong double in the jumping events, placing seventh in high jump and eighth in long jump. Macy Dimler added a 12th place finish in the 60 meter hurdles.

On the men's side, Lenzel Koskela had a strong day for the Vikings with a pair of personal records on the track. Koskela ran a 7.28 in the 60 meter preliminaries, qualifying for the finals where he placed seventh. He also had a new personal record in the 400 meters where he finished 11th in a time of 51.83 seconds.

Oscar Suniga took eighth in the 300 meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 37.53 seconds. It's also believed to be a new school record as currently there is no official record of a VCSU runner in the 300 meters.

Isaiah Tivis (60 meters), Orin Rambow (800 meters), Martin Mena (mile run) and Jaylon Sibley (triple jump) all added Top 15 finishes as well for the Viking men.

"The Bison Open provided us with quality competition that brought out the best in many of our athletes," said head coach Chris Johnson. "There were improvements across the board with 12 total personal records along with a new record and national qualifying mark in the women's shot put by Seri Geisler. Many of these student-athletes will rest up next weekend in preparation for the conference meet at SDSU."

Up next: VCSU will send a few athletes to the SDSU Indoor Classic on Feb. 10-11 in Brookings, S.D. Following that, the Vikings will compete at the NSAA Indoor Conference Championships on Feb. 18 in Brookings.
