ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Viking softball team opened the 2017 season with a split against NCAA Division II teams Saturday at the Presentation College Dome Tournament.

VCSU won its season opener, picking up a 4-1 win over Minnesota-Crookston. In the second game the Vikings lost a heartbreaker, 2-1 in nine innings to Southwest Minnesota State.

Up next: Valley City State (1-1) will play two more games Sunday in Aberdeen against Presentation College and Northern State University.

VCSU 4, Minnesota-Crookston 1
Morgan Nalley pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win and hit a solo home run as VCSU opened the 2017 season with a victory.

Crookston pushed across its only run in the top of the first inning, but VCSU gained a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning after an RBI double from Kelsey Hamade and an RBI groundout by Nalley. The Vikings pushed across an unearned run in the sixth and then Nalley added an insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.

Nalley drove in two runs and was one of three Vikings with two hits in the game. Hamade and Snyder each had two hits and a double. Tatum Lundin, Emily Smith and Kadie Anderson each had a hit.

Nalley pitched 6 1/3 innings for the win, allowing just five hits and striking out 12. Ashley Metcalf pitched a perfect two outs to finish the game.

Southwest MN State 2, VCSU 1 (9 innings)
Renee Snyder singled home Kelli Moore in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, but Southwest MN State pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth

Haley Butterfield pitched a complete game for VCSU, scattering 13 hits and two runs in 8 2/3 innings. She walked three and struck out five while throwing 137 pitches.

Emily Smith and Cassie Pautz each had two hits for VCSU, and Snyder and Moore each had one hit.
