Day two of the 2017 softball season was nearly identical to day one for Valley City State University.
After splitting their openers Saturday at the Presentation College Dome Tournament, the Vikings split again on Sunday. VCSU defeated Presentation College 4-1 in the first game Sunday, and then lost a 1-0 game to Northern State in eight innings.
VCSU ends its opening weekend at 2-2, with both losses coming in extra innings.
Up next: Valley City State (2-2) is back in Aberdeen this weekend for four more games at the Presentation College Dome.
VCSU 4, Presentation College 1
Kelli Moore homered and drove in three runs Sunday as the Vikings won the opener, 4-1 over Presentation College.
Cassie Pautz's RBI single drove in Moore to give VCSU a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Moore's RBI single scored Tatum Lundin the third to make it 2-0. With the Vikings leading 2-1, Moore blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fifth for a 4-1 lead.
VCSU had eight hits in the game, compared to just two for the Saints.
Morgan Nalley pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing just two hits and one run. She walked three and struck out eight.
Moore went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs, three RBIs and a walk. Pautz was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kelsey Hamade, Lundin, Nalley and Kadie Anderson all had one hit.
Northern State 1, VCSU 0
Northern State scored the game's only run in the bottom of the eight inning, handing VCSU its second extra-inning loss of the weekend.
The two teams were locked in a scoreless struggle until Northern's Kennedy Thompson ripped a one-out double to score Shayla Steinley for the eighth-inning victory.
VCSU had five hits in the game. Northern State had seven hits and both teams committed just one error. The Vikings' best chance at scoring came in the top of the seventh when Kelli Moore led off the inning with a double. But two strikeouts and a groundout left the go-ahead run in scoring position.
Moore went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Cassie Pautz, Kathleen Gallais and Renee Snyder all had one hit.
Kathleen Gallais pitched 5 1/3 innings for VCSU allowing four hits and no runs. Morgan Nalley took the loss, going two innings and allowing three hits and a run.
