The Valley City State softball team opened its spring trip to Tucson with a pair of losses Saturday, dropping games against University of Saint Francis and Judson University.

The Vikings opened the day with a 5-1 loss to Saint Francis. In the nightcap, Judson rallied past the Vikings late in a 9-7 game.

Up next: VCSU (7-9, 3-3 NSAA) plays Robert Morris (5:30 p.m.) and Purdue University Northwest (8 p.m.) on Sunday in Tucson.

Saint Francis 5, VCSU 1
University of Saint Francis scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed in a 5-1 win over the Vikings.

Cassie Pautz doubled home Kathleen Gallais in the third inning for VCSU's only run. The Vikings had eight hits but were hampered by five errors that led to three unearned runs.

Morgan Nalley took the loss for VCSU after starting in the circle. She gave up one hit and three runs – only one of which was earned – during Saint Francis' big first inning. Ashley Metcalf pitched five innings in relief, giving up six hits and two runs.

Judson University 9, VCSU 7
The Vikings banged out 15 hits and plated seven runs but it wasn't enough to hold up against Judson University.

VCSU led 7-3 after scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Judson rallied with six runs in the sixth inning en route to the 9-7 victory.

Renee Snyder and Tatum Lundin each had three hits for the Vikings offense. Kadie Anderson hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Kelli Moore added two hits as well.

Morgan Nalley pitched three innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Kathleen Gallais pitched three innings in relief and took the loss. Gallais gave up six hits and seven runs.
