The Viking softball team picked up the first win of its Tucson trip on Sunday, splitting a pair of games in Arizona.

Valley City State opened the day with a 7-4 win over Robert Morris University. In the nightcap, the Vikings dropped a 10-2 contest to Purdue University Northwest.

The Vikings are now 8-10 overall and 1-3 on their trip to Tucson.

Up next: VCSU faces Purdue Northwest (3:30 p.m.) and Huntington University (8 p.m.) on Monday.

VCSU 7, Robert Morris University 4
The Vikings scored three runs in the top of the third inning, rallying back from a 2-0 deficit on their way to a 7-4 victory.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, Cassie Pautz singled home two run to tie the game. Emma Maguire would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly from Emily Smith, putting the Vikings ahead for good at 3-2.

An RBI double from Tatum Lundin and an RBI single by Emily Smith gave the Vikings runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vikings would add two more runs in the sixth to build a 7-2 lead.

Ashley Metcalf earned the win for VCSU after pitching four innings in relief. She allowed five hits and two runs. She did not walk anyone and struck out three. Morgan Nalley started at pitcher for VCSU and worked three solid innings, allowing just two hits and two runs – only one of which was earned.

Pautz led the offense with a 3-for-4 game at the plate, driving in two runs. Kathleen Gallais also went 3-for-4, and Renee Snyder scored three runs. Tatum Lundin added two hits a run and an RBI.

Purdue Northwest 10, VCSU 2 (5 innings)
Purdue University Northwest used a 9-run fourth inning to down the Vikings on Sunday night.

VCSU led 2-1 entering the fourth before Purdue's fourth inning snowballed into 9-run inning that saw seven hits, two walks and a hit batter. The game ended after five innings due to run-rule.

Purdue Northwest finished with 10 runs on 10 hits. VCSU had two runs on four hits. Emily Smith had a hit and drove in VCSU's two runs. Cassie Pautz, Morgan Nalley and Kadie Anderson all had one hit each.
