The Viking softball team split a pair of games Wednesday during its spring trip to Tucson, Ariz.

VCSU dropped a 5-3 game to Huntington University, but bounced back with an 8-5 victory over Robert Morris University.

The Vikings are now 10-12 overall and 3-5 on their trip to Tucson.

Up next: VCSU continues its trip with two games Thursday against Hope International University (5:30 p.m.) and University of Minnesota-Crookston (8 p.m.).

Huntington University 5, VCSU 3
Trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning, the Vikings rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning. The momentum would be short-lived though as Huntington scored two runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead for good.

Haley Butterfield gave the Vikings a strong start at pitcher, earning a no-decision. Butterfield pitched six innings, allowing just three hits and three runs. She walked three and struck out four. Ashley Metcalf took the loss after coming on in the seventh inning for VCSU.

Cassie Pautz went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense. Tatum Lundin and Morgan Nalley each had an RBI.

VCSU 8, Robert Morris 5
The Vikings bounced back in game two on Wednesday, picking up an 8-5 victory over Robert Morris University.

VCSU struck early with three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed in the game. The Vikings led 6-1 in the fourth inning. After Robert Morris cut it to 6-5, the Vikings added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on Morgan Nalley's two-run single.

The Vikings collected 15 hits in the game but committed five errors. Robert Morris had nine hits and four errors.

Nalley had a big game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Cassie Pautz went 3-for-4 and scored four runs. Jayme Menard and Emily Smith also had three hits each. Kelli Moore finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Nalley started at pitcher for VCSU and went three innings, giving up six hits and one run. Kathleen Gallais pitched a pair of innings, allowing two hits and four runs. Ashley Metcalf came on in the sixth inning and was credited with the save after allowing just one hit and striking out three in her two innings of work.
