The Valley City State University golf team opened its spring season Thursday by defeating Dickinson State in a dual tournament.

The Vikings and Blue Hawks matched up their men's and women's teams on Thursday at Heart River Golf Course in Dickinson. The women competed in a stroke play, while the men's teams did match play.

Valley City State's women won the stroke play by 11 shots, scoring a 391 compared to Dickinson's 402. VCSU's Haley Christofferson carded an 88 and Nicole Heinitz shot an 89 as they placed first and second. Tory Anderson shot a 99 to finish fifth, and Megan McNamee rounded out VCSU's team score with a 115.

In men's match play, the Vikings won six out of seven matches and finished with 82.5 points compared to 43.5 points for Dickinson. Players were awarded 1 point for winning a hole and a half-point for tying on a hole.

VCSU's Jared Lentz and Dalton Beighley each tied for the biggest win of the day, taking their matches by scores of 14-4. Collin Hoss won his match 13.5-4.5.

At the No. 1 position, VCSU's Kyle Wiebe picked up an 11-7 victory over Dickinson's Zach Miller. Cameron Rall (10-8) and Jeremy Pasitney (11.5-6.5) also picked up wins for VCSU. Tyler Seeba suffered a close loss in his match, falling 9.5-8.5.

Up next: Valley City State will be back out west for the Dickinson State Spring Invite on Sunday and Monday. The 36-hole tournament will be played at Bully Pulpit Golf Course in Medora, N.D.
