ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Valley City State baseball team made it five wins in a row and 12 wins in the month of April on Monday with an 8-2 non-conference win at Presentation College.
VCSU scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning, breaking open a 1-1 game en route to the victory. The Vikings improve their record to 20-20 overall. Since starting the season 1-10, the Vikings have climbed all the way to .500 by going 19-10 over the last 29 games and 12-2 in the month of April.
The Vikings racked up 12 hits in the victory and did not commit an error. Presentation College scored its two runs on five hits.
Austin Smith had a pair of hits for VCSU, and 10 other Vikings had one hit each. Brady Anderson drove in two runs with a double in the fifth-inning rally, which included six VCSU hits. Nate Bagby, Emmanuel Leyva, Jorun Hamre and Tyler Ukestad all had one RBI.
Tyler Olson picked up the win after pitching two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and struck out one. Jesse Johnson started on the mound for VCSU and gave the Vikings three good innings. The freshman right-hander gave up just two hits and one run. He walked one and struck out one. Thomas Lindgren, Shaun Kourajian and Billy Callanan all pitched in relief, including 1 2/3 perfect innings by Kourajian.
Up next: Valley City State plays two more non-conference games Thursday at Minnesota-Morris. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. VCSU will resume conference play with games Saturday and Sunday at Dakota State University.
