The Valley City State University athletic department held its annual Viking Awards Banquet on Monday night, honoring its 42 seniors and many more standout student-athletes from the 2016-17 school year.

Athletic director Nate Stewart emceed the evening as VCSU recognized excellence in competition and the classroom. VCSU honored its 14 NAIA Champions of Character winners from the 2016-17 season, along with 30 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Steven Velarde (baseball), Morgan Nalley (softball) and Georgia Williams (women's basketball) were named winners of the Viking Impact Award, which recognized seniors who have had major impacts on their teams and on campus.

Senior Jared Meiklejohn (baseball) and junior Lexi Lennon (women's basketball) were named the 2016-17 Athletes of the Year.

The 2016-17 Newcomer of the Year awards went to juniors Austin Dunbar (men's basketball) and Megan Johnson (track & field/volleyball).

Cassie Pautz, a senior on the Viking softball team, was selected for the Golden Crutch award which was chosen by the VCSU athletic trainers.

Gregg Horner, a longtime assistant coach for Viking football, was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.

In a social media vote that incorporated both student-athletes and VCSU fans, the Viking football comeback win at Southeastern University was named the 2016-17 Game of the Year.

The VCSU Century Club recognized its 2017 Fans of the Year, Bob and Carrie Maresh, who received a standing ovation from all the student-athletes in attendance.
