The Valley City State softball team exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to defeat Dickinson State 9-1 in the opening round of the NSAA conference tournament.

The Vikings got on the board in the top of the first inning with one run.  Dickinson State tied the game in the bottom of the second.  The Viking offense came alive in the fifth inning with eight runs due in part to three Blue Hawk errors.  Kelli Moore had two RBIs in the inning.

The Viking defense came up big in the bottom of the fifth not allowing a run ending the game due to the eight run rule with a final score of 9-1.

Jayme Menard and Kelsey Hamade led the way offensively with four and three hits respectively. Tatum Lundin, Kelli Moore, Cassie Pautz, and Menard each had two RBIs.  The Vikings finished with 12 hits as a team.  Ashley Metcalf picked up the win on the mound striking out two without allowing a hit in two and a third innings pitched. 

The Vikings improves to 19-29 and will play Jamestown later tonight at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
