DICKINSON, N.D. – The Valley City State softball team ended day one of the 2017 NSAA Tournament with a 1-1 record after defeating Dickinson State and losing to University of Jamestown.

The No. 6-seeded Vikings opened the tournament with a 9-1 win over No. 3 seed Dickinson State, but then lost to No. 2 seed University of Jamestown by the same score, 9-1.

Valley City State (20-30) drops into loser-out play and will face Presentation College at 1 p.m. Central Time Saturday. The winner advances to play University of Jamestown at 3 p.m.

The Vikings were shut down in game two of the tournament by Jamestown pitcher Hanna Dunnigan who gave up just two hits and a run in five innings of work.

The Jimmies led 2-1 after four innings but ended the game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. VCSU had one run on just two hits and committed four errors. The Jimmies had nine runs on 10 hits and committed two errors.

Kelsey Hamade and Kelli Moore had VCSU's two hits while Moore scored the Vikings' only run.

Morgan Nalley took the loss after pitching the first two innings and giving up two hits and two runs. Ashley Metcalf and Haley Butterfield pitched in relief.

Up next: VCSU will face Presentation College in loser-out play Saturday at 1 p.m. central time.
