Track & Field - Wed, May 10, 2017

The Valley City State track & field team enters this week's North Star Athletic Association Outdoor Championships with several contenders for individual conference titles.

The 2017 NSAA Outdoor Championships will be held Thursday and Friday at the University of Jamestown. Events on Thursday start at 3 p.m. while events on Friday begin at 10 a.m.

Schedule of Events

If things go their way, Viking athletes could emerge with several conference titles and numerous All Conference honors by Friday afternoon. Viking athletes enter the meet with the top time or mark in five different events and have the second best time/mark in five more events. The top three finishers in individual events and top two teams in relays are named All Conference.

Seri Geisler is the favorite to win both the women's javelin and the women's shot put, having the top mark in both entering the start of competition Thursday. Geisler headlines a VCSU women's team that looks to find heavy success in the field events. VCSU has the top mark in three women's field events, and has 10 marks that are Top 4 in the jumping and throwing events.

Megan Johnson has the top mark in the long jump and is ranked second in triple jump and third in high jump. Kaitlin Connor is fourth in long and triple jump. Mackenzie Huber ranks second in shot put and third in discus, and Marilyn Quintero ranks second in the discus.

On the men's side of events, VCSU junior Dennis Gonzalez has the top time in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs as he looks for a pair of conference titles this week. The Viking men have 13 times or marks in the Top 4 of events, meaning they could be walking away with double-digit All Conference performances.

Lenzel Koskela has a shot at winning the 400 meter dash as he enters with the second-best time in the conference. Garret Roemmich and Ellwood Ellenson are second and third in javelin, respectively. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Smith Tuya ranks third in the field but the top three are separated by just three seconds.

The NSAA meet will be the conclusion of the season for most Viking track & field athletes. Seri Geisler, Megan Johnson and Mackenzie Huber have all qualified to compete at the NAIA National Championships, May 25-27 in Gulf Shores, Ala. A few other Vikings are close to reaching qualifying marks and the NSAA Championships will be their last opportunity to do so.
