The Valley City State University volleyball program has added a pair of high school teammates to bolster its 2017 recruiting class.

Head coach Adam Longmore has announced that Kylie Erickson and McKinley Putnam – both from North Pole, Alaska – have signed letters of intent to continue their education and volleyball careers at VCSU. The two were teammates on the volleyball squad at North Pole High School, which is coached by former VCSU volleyball player Aurissa Martens.

The duo helped North Pole High School to a 14-0 record last season, a No. 9 ranking in the state of Alaska, and a first place finish at the 2016 Valdez Tournament.

Erickson, a 5-foot-4 libero, was named to the All Mid-Alaska Conference Volleyball Team as both a junior and senior and lettered four years in varsity volleyball. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the academic honor roll all four years of high school.

"Kylie brings some depth to our back row positions which is going to be needed, not only now but in the future as well," said Longmore. "She will compete with all of our other players in that position right away. She has a great platform, moves quickly, and reads the game well. We are excited to see what she can do once she gets in our gym and starts training with us."

Erickson is the daughter of Tim and Carly Erickson. She plans to study athletic training while at VCSU.

Putnam, a 6-foot middle blocker, is a three-time All Conference selection and has earned several All Tournament Team honors throughout her career. Off the court, Putnam has been named to the 4.0 honor roll four times and served as the Senior Class President.

"McKinley is one of those players we were lucky to find late in the recruiting year," said Longmore. "We didn't really know about her until after Kylie committed. The two are the best of friends, and we are lucky to be getting them both. McKinley is a long middle-blocker who gives us some height along the net. With as well as our team usually serves, we expect McKinley to be a big presence blocking."

Putnam is the daughter of Jeff and Sunni Putnam. She plans to study pre-nursing while attending VCSU.

The additions of Erickson and Putnam wrap up the 2017 recruiting class for Viking volleyball. The class also includes: Nissa Johnson (6'1" Middle Blocker, Elk River, Minn.), Rowan Garcia (5'7" Setter, Johnstown, Colo.), Morganne Eppard (5'5" libero, Colorado Springs, Colo.), Ellie Winter (5'9", Right Side, Valley City, N.D.), Hannah Anderson (5'7", Outside Hitter, Milnor, N.D.) and Paige Benson (5'9", Outside Hitter, Hankinson, N.D.).
