Five Valley City State University softball players have been named 2017 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the national office announced this week.

A trio of seniors and two juniors received the honor that recognizes continued success of collegiate athletes in the classroom. In order to be nominated for the award, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher during their college career.

Seniors Ashley Metcalf (Seneca, Ore., math education), Morgan Nalley (Pocatello, Idaho, business administration) and Cassie Pautz (Tower City, N.D., business administration) received the award, along with juniors Kathleen Gallais (Lumsden, Saskatchewan, exercise science) and Kelsey Hamade (Abbotsford, British Columbia, health sciences).

Among North Star Athletic Association softball programs, VCSU had the most NAIA scholar-athletes.
