The Valley City State University football team has been picked to finish second in the North Star Athletic Association Preseason Coaches' Poll released Monday.

The Vikings – coming off a 6-4 overall record last season – received 37 points and one first-place vote in the poll, which was voted on by the conference's head coaches.

Dickinson State received five first-place votes and is the favorite to win the conference title. Valley City State opens the 2017 season by hosting Dickinson State on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. The Vikings and Blue Hawks will play each other twice this season with both games counting in the conference standings.

Dakota State was picked third in the poll, followed by Presentation College, University of Jamestown, Mayville State University and Waldorf University.

Valley City State University begins preseason practice this week. The Vikings return 11 starters from last year's squad, including All-American linebacker Nicholas McBeain.
