Valley City State University head baseball coach Casey Olney has announced the addition of 21 new student-athletes this fall.

All 21 have signed letters of intent to continue their baseball careers and education at VCSU this fall. The new student-athletes are a mix of freshmen and transfers, including nine from North Dakota, four from California, two each from Minnesota and Arizona, and one each from Idaho, Canada, Montana and Missouri.

"We were able to add an outstanding mix of freshman and transfers that can help right away and develop into the core for the future," said Olney. "We tried to target young men that will be a great fit at VCSU and Valley City, and will help augment our success both on the field and on campus."

Valley City State is coming off a 27-26 overall record last season and an 18-6 conference record. The Vikings finished third in the NSAA regular season standings before advancing to the Bracket B Championship of the NSAA Tournament. The Vikings graduated a group of 11 seniors who had played key roles for several years.

Olney credited assistant coach Anthony Kliniske with helping to fill out the large and important recruiting class coming in.

"Coach Kliniske did a great job searching nationwide for the right players, and we certainly could not have added so many talented young men without his remarkable efforts in recruiting," he said. "We graduated a really large and special class last season, so we will be counting on several new faces on the field. I expect there to be some outstanding competition between our returning players who have been developing and the new recruits we've brought in."

The Vikings are scheduled to open the 2017-18 season on Sept. 12 when they host Mayville State University for a 6 p.m. game. VCSU is slated to play eight games during the fall season.
