The Valley City State volleyball team opened the 2017 season this past weekend with a tough schedule at the Northwestern College Tournament in Orange City, Iowa.

The Vikings faced three Top 15 opponents in their four matches as they posted an 0-4 record on the weekend. VCSU will be back in action Friday and Saturday with matches at the St. Olaf Tournament in Northfield, Minn.

#15 Doane University 3, VCSU 2
Valley City State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set against No. 15-ranked Doane University, but the Tigers hung on for a 15-11 win in the deciding set.

Doane won the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-11. The Vikings fought back with 25-21 and 25-20 wins in the third and fourth sets.

Three Vikings had double-digit kills, led by 12 each from Paige Benson and Megan Johnson. Clarissa Olson had 11 kills and a team-high .321 attack percentage. Haile Wilds added nine kills. Freshman setter Rowan Garcia had 44 assists in the match while Johnson and Wilds each had a pair of service aces.

#13 Northwestern College 3, VCSU 0
Northwestern College defeated the Vikings in their second match of the tournament, 25-15, 25-15, 25-17.

Megan Johnson led the Viking attack with 11 kills. Garcia recorded 25 assists, and Haile Wilds had 12 digs.

Dakota Wesleyan 3, VCSU 0
On Saturday, the Vikings lost a three-set match to Dakota Wesleyan University, falling by scores of 22-25, 11-25, 19-25.

Clarissa Olson had seven kills in the loss, and both Megan Johnson and Paige Benson recorded six kills. Rowan Garcia and Leah Ruter each had 14 assists, and Garcia and Polette Medina had two aces each.

#2 Dordt College 3, VCSU 0
VCSU wrapped up the tournament by facing the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Dordt College.

The Defenders lived up to their ranking as they downed the Vikings in straight sets, 25-16, 25-15, 25-15.

Paige Benson recored seven kills for the Vikings while Polette Medina had six kills in the loss.

Up next: The competition changes for VCSU as the Vikings travel to Northfield, Minn., this weekend for a tournament at St. Olaf and Carleton College. VCSU will play four matches against NCAA Division III schools.
