The Viking football team suffered a tough road loss Saturday afternoon, falling 47-9 at Hastings College (Neb.).

Hastings dominated the ground game, racking up 299 rushing yards, and took advantage of four VCSU turnovers in the contest. Things went south early for the Vikings, who trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-3 at halftime.

Valley City State drops to 1-2 overall this season. Hastings College, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improves to 3-0.

The Broncos out-gained the Vikings 427-238 in offensive yards, including a 299-129 advantage on the ground. Hastings College had two 100-yard rushers as Anthony Cloyd gained 127 yards on 15 carries and Tahj Willingham rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns.

Viking running back Louis Quinones led the VCSU offense with 67 yards on 17 carries. Anthony Logan gained 52 yards on seven carries. Quarterback Jalen Pfeifer went 12-for-28 for 109 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.

Jake Peterson had five catches for 54 yards, and Zackary Schmidt had three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Nicholas McBeain racked up 15 tackles to lead the Viking defense.

VCSU's first points came late in the second quarter as Landon Arredondo nailed a 30-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the half. Pfeifer connected with Schmidt for a 21-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter for VCSU's lone touchdown of the game.

Up next: Valley City State (1-2, 0-1 NSAA) hosts rival University of Jamestown for a conference game Saturday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Valley City.
