Jalen Pfeifer had a breakout game on the season's biggest stage Saturday. The Valley City State freshman quarterback passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as he and a dominant defense led the Vikings to a 43-13 thumping over rival University of Jamestown.

The Vikings led 29-0 at halftime and 36-0 in the third quarter as they won the 118th meeting between the two programs. Valley City State now leads the all-time series 61-52-5 and leads the Paint Bucket series 40-30.

VCSU improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in North Star Athletic Association plays this season, while Jamestown drops to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

VCSU's ensuing drive ended in a 19-yard touchdown run by Pfeifer, as he marched the Vikings 55 yards in four plays for an 8-0 lead.

Pfeifer connected with his receivers for three more touchdowns in the first half, including strikes of 30 yards to Jake Peterson, 35 yards to Marc Wagner, and then a 26-yarder to Peterson with 30 seconds left in the half. Landon Arredondo nailed all three extra points as the Vikings led 29-0 at halftime.

For the game Jamestown picked up 296 yards, including 106 on the ground and 190 through the air. Valley City State's offense racked up 472 total yards, including 303 passing yards and 169 rushing yards on 38 carries.

Pfeifer had a banner day at quarterback, completing 21 out of 25 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 59 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Jake Peterson hauled in seven catches for 113 yards and two scores. Wagner had two catches for 40 yards and a score. Louis Quinones rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
