VALLEY CITY – Valley City State erupted for 17 hits and 12 runs Wednesday night as the Viking baseball team rolled to a 12-5 victory against Mayville State University.

The Vikings had scored just nine total runs through their first three games this fall, but the bats came alive early Wednesday. Brady Smith led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run, setting the tone for the night. The Vikings scored two runs in the first, one in the second and then took the lead for good with six runs in the sixth inning. Grant Wehseler drilled a two-run home run in the fifth inning as the Vikings built a 12-5 lead after five innings and coasted down the stretch with strong innings from the bullpen.

VCSU improves to 2-2 overall while Mayville State drops to 2-3 overall.

Brady Engebretson earned the win in relief, pitching out of a third-inning jam and giving VCSU four strong innings. The junior left-hander allowed just two hits and one run, and did not walk anyone as he picked up the victory on the mound. Shaun Kourajian started for VCSU and went two solid innings before running into trouble in the third. Tyler Kliniske pitched two scoreless innings as well.

The Vikings trailed 4-3 entering the bottom of the third inning, but the offense drilled seven hits in the inning that led to six runs and a 9-4 lead.

Several Vikings had big nights as the plate, including Wehseler who had a two-run double during the big third inning rally to go along with his two-run home run. Wehseler finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Nate Soulis had three hits, scored two runs and drove in one. Kody Lane went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI. Alexandro Valenzuela had a pair of hits as well.

The Vikings move to 2-0 against the Comets this fall. VCSU also defeated Mayville State in the fall season opener, 4-2.

Up next: Valley City State (2-2) travels to La Crosse, Wis., this weekend for games Saturday and Sunday.
