The Valley City State volleyball team takes its shot at the No. 2 team in the country Friday night, hosting undefeated Viterbo University for a conference match.

The Vikings and V-Hawks match up at 7 p.m. Friday at VCSU's Graichen Gymnasium. Viterbo enters the weekend with a 15-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play. The V-Hawks are the No. 2 team in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll released last week.

The Vikings enter the weekend with a 7-7 overall record and a 1-2 mark in conference play. VCSU will also host Waldorf University on Saturday at 3 p.m.  Valley City State is coming off a 2-1 road trip last weekend, winning matches at Grace University and Dakota State University. VCSU's loss came at No. 19-ranked Bellevue University.

The Vikings are currently sixth in the NSAA standings. Bellevue leads the way with a 5-0 record, followed by Viterbo (3-0), Jamestown (2-1), Presentation College (3-2), Dakota State (2-2), VCSU (1-2), Dickinson State (1-3), Mayville State (1-3) and Waldorf University (0-4).

Valley City State is 0-7 against Viterbo, dating back to 2011. The Vikings and V-Hawks met three times last season. Viterbo, which was ranked in the Top 5, swept all three matches.

VCSU is 8-6 against Waldorf University, dating back to the 2008 season. The Vikings and Warriors split their two matches last season with the home team winning each.

The Vikings play five of their next six matches at home. After this weekend, VCSU will go to Mayville State on Oct. 4 before hosting Dickinson State (Oct. 6), University of Jamestown (Oct. 7) and Dakota State University (Oct. 11).
