After a week off, the Valley City State University football team resumes its season this weekend with a road trip to Forest City, Iowa.

The Vikings will face Waldorf University at 1 p.m. Saturday in a North Star Athletic Association conference game as both teams try to separate themselves in the NSAA standings.

VCSU enters the contest with a 2-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play. The Vikings are riding the momentum of a 43-13 victory over rival University of Jamestown back on Sept. 16. Waldorf University also sports a 2-2 overall mark and a 1-1 record in the conference.

The NSAA standings are currently a log-jam with five teams tied for second place. Dickinson State leads the way with a 2-0 record, and Mayville State is 0-2. The five other teams are all 1-1 in conference play.

The Warriors are in their first year under new head coach Josh Littrell, who worked the previous four seasons as offensive coordinator for Doane University. The Warriors have been fairly balanced offensively this season, averaging 402 yards per game, including 174 rushing and 228 yards passing.They have had two monster offense games, putting up 62 and 54 points in wins over Briar Cliff and Presentation College.

Saturday's game will be broadcast live on KOVC Radio 1490-AM, and will also be streamed live at newsdakota.com. The Voice of the Vikings, Joel Morgan, is making the trip to Forest City to call the game.

The Series: Saturday's game will be the fifth all-time meeting between the Vikings and Warriors. VCSU is 4-0 in the series, including a 36-7 victory last season in Valley City.

Last Matchup: Valley City State put up 26 first-half points as the Vikings rolled to a 36-7 victory against Waldorf on Sept. 24, 2016. The Vikings led 26-0 at halftime and 36-0 in the fourth quarter. VCSU racked up 416 total yards in the contest, including 205 on the ground and 211 through the air. Waldorf gained 225 total yards – 76 rushing and 149 passing.

Last Week: The Vikings did not play last weekend, but rolled to a 43-13 win over the University of Jamestown back on Sept. 16. Freshman quarterback Jalen Pfeifer had a breakout game with four total touchdowns and 270 passing yards. Waldorf is coming off a 26-19 loss to the University of Jamestown on Sept. 23.

NSAA Games: Valley City State is 1-1 in conference play, losing a 30-21 contest to Dickinson State before beating Jamestown 43-13. Waldorf is also 1-1 after losing 26-19 to Jamestown but beating Presentation College, 54-47.

National Rankings: VCSU senior linebacker Nicholas McBeain leads the nation in tackles per game, averaging 17/contest so far. He is just three tackles away from reaching 500 career tackles as a Viking. VCSU's defense is 17th in the NAIA in pass defense per game, giving up just 178 yards per game through the air. Waldorf ranks 22nd in scoring offense per game, averaging 37.3 points so far this season.

Around the North Star: Other games on Saturday include Presentation College at Dickinson State, Dakota State at University of Jamestown, and Montana State-Northern at Mayville State University.
