ROCHESTER, MINN. – Nate Soulis hit a walk-off home run in game one Saturday as the Valley City State baseball team split a doubleheader with Doane University.

Soulis' 3-run blast in the bottom of the ninth capped a 9-6 comeback win for the Vikings, who trailed 6-4 after five innings of the scheduled 7-inning game. Grant Wehseler sent the game to extra innings with a monster solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 6-6. That set up Soulis' walk-off blast, which capped a monster day for him at the plate.

Doane University rebounded with a 17-3 win in game two. Valley City State moves to 3-3 this fall. Doane is now 1-1.

Up next: Valley City State will play Midland University in a single 7-inning game Sunday in La Crosse, Wis.

VCSU 9, Doane University 6 (9 innings)
The Vikings hit three home runs in the opener, none bigger than the late-inning blasts by Wehseler and Soulis.

Wehseler's solo shot that extended the game was his second home run of the contest. VCSU finished with 12 hits in the victory and did not commit an error. Doane had six runs on seven hits. The Tigers committed two errors.

Soulis finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs. He had two doubles and the walk-off home run. Wehseler went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Brady Smith was 2-for-5 with two runs, and Alejandro Gutierrez went 3-for-4.

Max Koprek earned the win for VCSU after pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings. Andrew Hirsch was strong in relief, going three innings and allowing just one hit and one run. Freshman Tyler Kliniske started on the mound for VCSU and went four innings, giving up six hits and five runs.

Doane 17, VCSU 3
Doane's bats came alive in game two as they erupted for 17 runs and 15 hits in a 17-3 win. The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed.

VCSU scored all three of its runs in the third inning and finished the game with seven hits. Cody Kingsbury led the Viking offense with two hits and a run scored.

Jesse Johnson took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and seven runs over three innings.
