VALLEY CITY - The Viking volleyball team took one set from the University of Jamestown Saturday afternoon, but the No. 20-ranked Jimmies rebounded to win the road match in four sets.

Jamestown won the opener 25-23 – rallying from a 20-14 deficit – and then the Vikings won set two 25-20 to even the match at 1-1. The Jimmies would take it from there though as they won 25-21 and 25-14 to close out the match.

Valley City State drops to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Vikings had chances to win sets one and three as well, but Jamestown used big runs to overcome early deficits. Jamestown, ranked No. 20 in the nation, improves to 14-6 overall and 7-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.

Jamestown outhit the Vikings. 241 to .140 in the match. The Jimmies posted 10 team blocks while the Vikings recorded six. VCSU was more aggressive at the serving line as the Vikings had 15 aces and 14 errors. Jamestown served eight aces and 11 errors.

The Vikings started fast in front of their home crowd and led 20-14 late in the first set. Jamestown setter Josie Beckman went to the service line for Jamestown and didn't leave for a long time as the Jimmies ripped off nine straight points to turn a 20-14 deficit into a 23-20 lead. The Vikings got back to within 24-23, but Beckman put the set away with a dump kill after a long rally on the point.

VCSU broke through with a 25-20 victory in set two. After Jamestown scored five straight points to go up 12-11, the Vikings responded with a 8-2 run – including the last three on kills by Taylor Sharp – as they built a 19-14 lead and rolled to the victory.

Valley City State again started fast in set three, building an early 12-6 lead. Back-to-back aces by Polette Medina gave VCSU a 17-11 lead as they appeared on the edge of a 2-1 lead. The Jimmies again had the answer, this time with six straight points to tie the set at 17-17. The teams traded points to 21-21 before Jamestown scored the final four points of the set for a 25-21 win.

Set four was all Jimmies from the start as they jumped out to a 12-6 lead and coasted to a 25-14 victory.

Taylor Sharp led the Viking attack with 10 kills and served two aces. Hailie Wilds posted 15 digs and had five aces. Polette Medina served four aces and had 15 digs.

Mogan Hensch led the Jimmies with 11 kills, including some booming points down the stretch. Madison Wendel and Isabel Wedell each had nine kills. Elise Peterson led the team with 25 digs while Whitney King had 20 assists. Beckman led with three aces and added 18 assists.

Up next: Valley City State (10-9, 4-4 NSAA) hosts Dakota State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. University of Jamestown is off until Oct. 20 when they host Waldorf University.
