Valley City State University senior Thomas Cortes set a new school record Saturday for career field goals made and was named the NSAA Special Teams Player of the Week. Cortes nailed a 23-yard field goal in the first quarter, giving him 26 career field goals, which breaks the old school record of 25 held by Jeff Pederson.
Earlier this season, Cortes also became the school record-holder in career PAT kicks made and attempted. Through Saturday, Cortes is 123-for-136 on PAT kicks. That breaks the old records of 104 made and 125 attempted, both held by Mark Ukestad.
Cortes finished Saturday's win over Waldorf College 7-for-8 on PATs and 1-for-1 on field goals. He had two touchbacks and forced four fair catches in 10 kickoffs. Waldorf's starting field position was inside its own 30-yard line seven times on Saturday following Cortes kickoffs. His performance earned him the NSAA Special Teams Player of the Week award, announced on Monday.
